diagnosed, we need a “mythology of the planet”, how
do we find such a mythology?

In retrospect, such a question will seem foolish.

But, as is usually the case, the search is too easy to be
necessary, and the solution is too conspicuous to be

obvious. Zen is the connection between mythology,
science and nature. It integrates them into a

“mythology of the planet”.

This was an insight that did not a occur as a
laboriously constructed thought but as a spontaneous

awareness, perhaps the intuitive fruition of the many
years of reading, thinking and writing on these four

subjects. Zen simply connected all their seeming
differences into a unified and meaningful whole. And

so, as with any clear and indelible realization that
refuses to be dismissed, it became a compulsion

demanding full attention. Then came the protracted,

obligatory and challenging task of exploring and
explaining a relationship that seemed so obvious in the
flash of a moment.

This led in many rewarding directions. Each of
the four subjects is an incredibly rich place for
pondering and exploring, with each providing deep

insights into the character and history of our individual

and collective selves. But it was the ubiquity and
